By integrating the "HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync", IGEL has expanded the range of applications for its Linux thin clients with high-performance multimedia communication capabilities.

In addition to the position of Tizen's parents -- Intel, the world's largest chip maker, and Samsung, the world's largest handset maker -- the open-source Linux-based mobile operating system is being supported by a variety of other device makers, as well as mobile carriers.

Ubuntu is on a roll. Barely a month and a half after the official unveiling of Ubuntu for Phones, Canonical has just revealed their next flagship product, dubbed as Ubuntu on Tablets. With the introduction of platforms tailor-made for phones and tablets now, Canonical have made their intentions very clear. Ubuntu is not going to be an also-ran. And they are going to compete head-on with the mighty Apples and Androids with their one-experience-across-devices model which already include regular desktops apart from phones and tablets, and even TVs later on.

Linux kernel 3.8 has been released . This release includes support in Ext4 for embedding very small files in the inode, which greatly improves the performance for these files and saves some disk space.

Canonical has unveiled a new Ubuntu tablet interface today, which shares some of the Ubuntu Phone OS elements, but it also comes with new features such as a "Side Stage" which lets you use phone and tablet apps in the same time.

Side Stage is a new feature introduced with Ubuntu for tablets that allows users to "swipe through the right edge and you reveal phone apps running on your tablet. [...] Any tablet app that supports the phone layout will also fit in the Side Stage. You can have it loose or split the screen between the tablet and phone layout", says Mark Shuttleworth in the Ubuntu for tablets presentation video which you can watch at the end of the post.

We last reported on Dell's Ubuntu-powered XPS-13 Developer Edition at the tail end of November 2012, when the laptop was released.

The Linux-based Tizen operating system for mobile devices has officially hit version 2.0 , with the relevant source code and SDK now available for devs.

Just like more than a month ago, when Ubuntu Phone OS was announced, a countdown is displayed on the Ubuntu.com homepage, and this time it says: "Tick, tock, tablet time!".

So what could this be? An Ubuntu tablet is about to be released? Or more likely, an optimized Ubuntu Phone OS for tablets?
